Settled north of the Merritt Parkway is what most people would consider the most peaceful and tranquil neighborhood in Greenwich, known as Back Country. This cinematic section of Greenwich is unparalleled. With its expansive estates and peaceful ambiance, Back Country offers an idyllic retreat from the fast-paced world, allowing you to unwind and savor the beauty of your surroundings. The natural beauty is celebrated with its hiking trails, ponds, rivers, and natural preservations sprinkled throughout. Country lanes host manicured estates, some settled on well over ten acres of land. Many of these mansions, villas, and estates celebrate award-winning architecture and design.  But, if you thought that's all that Back Country had to offer, you would be mistaken. In addition to the expansive estates, you can often find more modest homes that offer better value than similar homes in other parts of town. Let’s explore the captivating neighborhood of Back Country.

Housing

Geographically, Back Country stretches to the Stamford border on the east, and to the New York border on the north and west sides. This expansive territory allows for homes in this part of town to enjoy large plots of land. The large acreage is due to some of the estates settled on multiple plots of land as well as the zoning regulations.

One exclusive community in Back Country is the notable Conyers Farm. A private neighborhood, Conyers Farm is home to just under 80 houses. Estates here are luxurious, including private entrances, long winding driveways, pastoral grounds, multiple car garages, and inground pools. Conyers Farm employs its private security at both of its gated entrances. It also offers amenities such as pristine walking trails, polo fields, and riding trails.

Despite the fact that Back Country is host to many of Greenwich's fine estates, it's also a great location for those looking for good value in Greenwich. For a few extra minutes of drive time, you can often save hundreds of thousands of dollars, or find yourself a better home for your budget than you would if you were shopping south of the Merritt Parkway. 

Country Clubs & Golf Courses

This neighborhood is home to several private golf courses and clubs. The Stanwich Club is a premier 18-hole golf club that is one of the best in the country. In fact, it has hosted the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship, Palmer Cup, Wyndham Cup, and numerous other Professional and Amateur Championships over the years. 

You also have the private Fairview Country Club. This family-friendly club offers its members access to an 18-hole golf course, different racquet programs, including tennis and paddle, plus swimming and fine dining. 

Another notable club is the Tamarack Country Club. Similar to Fairview Country Club, this is a family-friendly club home to one of the finest 18-hole golf courses around. The club also offers its members family-friendly amenities such as tennis, swimming, and junior programs. The state-of-the-art clubhouse offers exquisite dining experiences as well. 

If you are looking for a public golf course, try Griffith E Harris, at least until you get a sponsor at one of the other clubs previously mentioned. 

Parks & Recreation

The natural backdrop of Back Country is beloved for giving residents in this neighborhood the best outdoor living. Two green spaces in particular are the Babcock Preserve and the Wildflower Sanctuary. 

The Babcock Preserve is a forested, 300-acre preserve featuring walking, hiking, running, and bridle paths, a picnic area, and a stream. The preserve also has 7 miles of trails including a 4.1-mile loop. 

The Wildflower Sanctuary, managed by the National Audubon Society, is a 135-acre sanctuary that boasts eight miles of trails that pass through formerly abandoned farmland and a variety of wetland habitats. 

Shopping & Commuting

While Back Country is settled further from downtown, it’s only about a 10-20 minute drive to Greenwich’s shopping district, including Greenwich Ave. If you want to know more about Greenwich Ave, or any other part of Greenwich, check out our channel for other videos on the area.

While it may look far on the map, Riversville Road, Round Hill Road, Lake Ave and North Street are four main thoroughfares that Back Country residents often travel to get to downtown Greenwich. There are few stop signs or traffic lights, making travel quick and efficient, when compared to the southern part of town. 

Upscale shopping and dining, home decor boutiques, cafes, and markets are all mostly located in the southern part of town. 

New York City commuters will likely leave from the main Greenwich train station, which will get you to Grand Central in about 44 minutes. If you plan on Driving to work, the Merritt Parkway and or Interstate 684 are also convenient options. 

Schools & Places To Stay

Public school assignments in Greenwich are based on specific addresses. If you live in the Back Country neighborhood, your elementary-age children will likely attend Parkway Elementary School, while middle schoolers will likely go to Western or Central Middle School. All public school students go to Greenwich High.
