The Glass House
For decades, New Canaan has had a reputation for honoring architecture. One signature feature located in Ponus Ridge is The Glass House built by the famous architect Philip Johnson. The Glass House is an example of modern architecture, landscape, and art that New Canaan is known for.
This pastoral 49-acre landscape includes fourteen structures, including the Glass House and features a permanent collection of 20th-century painting and sculpture, along with temporary exhibitions. Tours of the site are available April through December and advance reservations are recommended.
Housing
Ponus Ridge is known for its world class mansions and estates set behind a scenic backdrop. Long, winding, private driveways lead to these custom built homes located on well over two acres of land. Attention to every detail is considered in these transitional estates including their layouts, expressive millwork and expansive windows allowing for natural light.
Illustrative views come with many of these custom builds, and many have well over 5,000 square feet of indoor living space. And, the outdoor space is equal in beauty and luxury. Professionally groomed gardens with outdoor living patios adjacent to inground, gunite pools and multi-use courts can be found here, in addition to more modest homes. While residents here enjoy the tranquil living, they also appreciate the easy access to New Canaan’s high end amenities and outdoor green spaces.
Parks
One beloved green space in Ponus Ridge is Irwin Park. Irwin Park is known as a people sanctuary, with benches and chairs scattered among its vast lawns, fields and orchards. A privately funded, environmentally friendly trail loops for almost a mile around the park’s 36 acres. Residents enjoy walking, jogging, riding bicycles, and even cross-country skiing.
Another excellent park is the Olive and George Lee memorial Park, which is a must see location in the Spring and summer when all of the flowering plants come to life.
One place that is always hopping, no matter the time of year, is Waveny Park. Although technically out of the Ponus Ridge Neighborhood, it's a town staple with its pool, ball fields, mansion, arts center and theater, to name a few. Check out our Talmadge Hill neighborhood tour to learn more.
Shopping & Commuting
Depending on where you live in Ponus Ridge, Town Center is only about a 2 to 10 minute drive. This suburban-metropolitan center enjoys posh clothing shops and boutiques, casual and fine dining, cafes, wine and liquor stores, banks, pharmacies and grocery stores. Check out our Town Center neighborhood tour to learn more about this neighborhood.
If you’re a commuter, you’ll either use the New Canaan train station or the Talmadge Hill train station depending on where in Ponus Ridge you settle down. Both stations will get you to Grand Central station in a bit over an hour, and may require transfers at the Stamford station.
Residents further north in Ponus Ridge can also access shopping and dining at Scott’s Corners shopping center in New York’s Pound Ridge. Right over the border, you can easily get to a cafe, market, home decor store, fine and casual dining, among other conveniences.
Schools & Places To Stay
School assignments in New Canaan are based on your addresses. If you live in the Ponus Ridge neighborhood, your elementary-age children will likely attend West Elementary School, but some Ponus Ridge homes fall under South Elementary School’s jurisdiction. To see what elementary school a specific address goes to, try the school lookup feature in our New Canaan Buyers’ Guide, available at the link below, where I have also compiled all of my New Canaan Maps, Videos, and research for you.
If you are looking for an alternative to public schools, New Canaan Country School is located in this neighborhood. New Canaan Country School is a pre-K through Grade 9 co-ed, independent day school.
When exploring this area, my clients have enjoyed staying at The Roger Sherman Inn. This historic and beautiful inn is known for its blend of elegant charm in a picturesque setting. The fine dining experience is quite popular with locals. My clients have also loved staying at GrayBarns on the Silvermine River. Check out our Silvermine tour to learn more about this small boutique hotel with an exquisite restaurant.
