Location & Housing
You have heard it before. Location, location, location. And it’s why so many people are attracted to this southern part of town. It offers easy access to all that the Gold Coast has to offer, including the Merritt Parkway, Darien’s beaches, and the train to Manhattan.
Within walking distance to many Talmadge Hill homes is New Canaan’s jewel, Waveny Park. Like no ordinary park, Waveny Park was created over 100 years ago by the Olmsted Brothers, the same firm that built Central Park in New York City. And, Like Central Park, Waveny is much more than walking trails.
To begin, it is home to hundreds of acres of land that showcase extensive lawns and meadows, 4.5 miles of woodland trails, ponds, and gardens. Many fields, including track, baseball, softball, and soccer fields host youth outings. If that weren't enough, there are tennis courts and a disc golf course too.
Parks & Activities
Families with children love Waveny Park for its playground, and the expansive pool reserved for residents. For those with fur babies, the dog park is a great place to let them blow off some steam.
The centerpiece of Waveny Park is Waveny House. This Tudor mansion sits majestically overlooking endless views of the New Canaan countryside. Here you will find beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces. The Waveny House is home to many occasions including weddings and family gatherings.
The Carriage Barn Arts Center and The Powerhouse Theater are located here too. While the art center hosts continuous exhibitions, many featuring local artists, the Powerhouse Theater has a 115-seat capacity and holds year-round productions including a family holiday show.
The Lapham Community Center is also an important part of Waveny Park. Here, all adults, ages 21 and over, can enjoy programs and services. This includes continuing education courses, various health and exercise programs, and a number of special events.
Commuters love Talmadge Hill as it offers residents its very own train station. The station is located on the border of Darien and New Canaan and is only a short ride from most of this neighborhood. The ride into Grand Central is just about an hour but may require a transfer at the Stamford station.
Schools & Places To Go
School assignments in New Canaan are based on addresses. If you live in the Talmadge Hill neighborhood, your elementary-age children will likely attend either South or West Elementary Schools. All New Cannan children go to Saxe Middle School and New Canaan High School. To see what school a specific address goes to, try the school lookup feature in our New Canaan Buyers’ Guide. Where I have compiled all of my maps, videos, and research for you. It's available at the link below.
The streets in Talmadge Hill tend to be close-knit, especially to the east of Waveny Park. It's a place where children can ride their bikes and play with friends. The neighborhood is also a short ride to New Canaan town center which offers 100s of stores offering all of the dining and shopping you will need on a daily basis. Check out our New Canaan Town Center tour to learn more about this area.
When exploring this area, my clients have enjoyed staying at either The Roger Sherman Inn or the GrayBarns Inn. Both are excellent.
