Shopping & Commuting

Town Center, as its name suggests, is the heart of New Canaan. This neighborhood boasts an array of upscale clothing shops, exclusive boutiques, a variety of dining options ranging from casual to fine dining, coffee shops, liquor stores, banks, pharmacies, and grocery stores, all within a stone's throw of one another.

The ease of access to these amenities is a hallmark of Town Center, with pedestrian-friendly walkways and sidewalks, you’re almost guaranteed to bump into friends and neighbors while strolling through the area.

Adding to its convenience, the New Canaan Train Station is a central feature of the neighborhood, providing commuters an easy gateway to New York City. The train will get you to Grand Central in a bit over an hour, but some trains will require a transfer at the Stamford station. If you commute by car, the Merritt Parkway entrance is only about 6 minutes away.

Housing

The types of properties you’ll find in Town Center vary from multi-families to condos, to single-family homes, all within close proximity to one another. Many are easily walkable to town.

If you’re looking for upscale maintenance-free living, Town Center is home to high-end, townhomes and condominiums as well; which are also walkable to town.

South of Town Center are smaller properties with homes closer together. Here, the homes maximize their space and curb appeal. If you were considering Darien, or looking for easy access to coastal amenities, this area might be worth a look.

As you travel north of Main Street and head outside of the center of town, homes and properties expand. Here, many homes are updated with classic charm and grace and still offer close proximity to downtown.

Schools

School assignments in New Canaan are based on your addresses. If you live in the Town Center, your elementary-age children will likely attend South Elementary School.

All New Cannan residents go to Saxe Middle School and New Canaan High School. To see what elementary school a specific address goes to, try the school lookup feature in our New Canaan Buyers’ Guide, available at the link below, where I have also compiled all of my New Canaan Maps, Videos, and research for you.

Parks & Nature

New Canaan is home to many parks and green spaces. In the Town Center neighborhood, Mead Memorial Park is a favorite. It includes one full-sized baseball field, two little league fields, playscape facilities, and eight clay tennis courts with five pickleball courts.

For those who love a good stroll, there is a walking path around a pond. Mead Memorial Park borders Bristow Bird Sanctuary, which has additional walking trails.

Another park that has walking trails is Mill Pond Park, and When the pond freezes over here,  you can go ice skating too.

Town Center is also home to the New Canaan Nature Center. This 40-acre oasis is home to walking trails that meander through meadows, and woodlands. They also have a variety of wildlife exhibits and host a plethora of events for nature enthusiasts of all ages.

Activities & Places To Stay

New Canaan’s famous Glass House is located just outside of Town Center, but the bus leaves from here. This architectural wonder and historic site is owned and operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Check out our Ponus Ridge neighborhood tour to learn more about this spectacular property.

For those seeking culture, arts, and intellectual programs, The New Canaan Public Library is located in the Town Center neighborhood as well. In addition to its enormous collection, the library offers programs for children, youth, and adults. There is even a cafe inside so you can read to your heart's content.

When exploring this area, my clients have enjoyed staying at The Roger Sherman Inn. This historic and beloved inn is known for its blend of elegant charm set in a picturesque setting. The fine dining experience is quite popular with locals.
