Introduction:

Let’s face it, there is a big difference between living in the city and living in the suburbs. Some people that move here from New York City …don't like it. It’s just not for them. Let’s discuss why you might not like it here, and what to expect if you do decide to make the move.

Hi, my name is Charlie Vinci and I am a local realtor. My team and I work with home buyers and sellers in the Gold Coast area of Connecticut.

Many of our buyers come from New York City seeking a suburban lifestyle. To be honest, I see the appeal of the city and why life can be so convenient. In minutes, you can walk or take the subway just about anything you could need or want. Personally, I love not having to deal with my car when I am in manhattan.

Considering a Move?:

So why in the world would anyone consider moving to CT from NYC??

Well, Most people are attracted to the lower living costs, schools, and better lifestyle that Connecticut offers.

It’s a great environment to raise children. You get more living space for everyone to spread out, there is usually room for an office or two, plus the park-like backyard for the kids to play in, and in many cases a quiet street or a park where the kids can ride their bike or play with their friends.

Some  of our clients even choose to keep their New York City apartment, and head out to their Connecticut home on the weekend, getting the best of both worlds.

One thing I have noticed that some of my New York City clients are surprised by is that our neighborhoods aren't as walkable as they are are used to. Yes, we have great walkable neighborhoods like old Greenwich. Although in general, housing is more spread out here as you move to the north, away from Long Island Sound. This makes some areas less walkable to retail and shopping, with the trade off being that you get a larger, more park-like lot. For this reason, I recommend having at least one car when you move here.

No one ever complained about food or shopping here, but you are going to have to get used to not being so close to a broadway show, or a quick cab ride from your favorite entertainer when they are in town. You’ll jump on a train for that, but it’s probably an occasional event anyway.

In my experience, families rarely go back to the city. This is most likely because there is a clear lifestyle improvement when living in the suburbs with children. I find that most people go back because they don’t have kids and the convenience of city living without kids is just hard to beat.
